EMERGE Mini-Conference

September 27 @ 8:00 am - 12:30 pm EDT

EMERGE is a series of experiences tailored to help emerging designers (those with 0-5 years of experience) hone their skills, discover their talents, and grow their careers. EMERGE is a nationally supported initiative established by AIGA Minnesota, in partnership with AIGA’s Diversity & Inclusion Task Force. AIGA Cincinnati is excited to be participating in this initiative by hosting a mini-conference created specifically for emerging designers by emerging designers. This half-day event will include an engaging panel discussion, a personal branding workshop, and a two-part keynote presentation. The day also includes time for networking, free professional headshots, unlimited coffee, and breakfast + snacks. The goal of EMERGE is to help you flourish as a designer—in the areas of employment, growth, leadership, entrepreneurship, and life skills.

Our panel will also share their advice and experience on updating your portfolio, leveraging your personal brand as an asset, and how to use your personal brand to identify and solve top challenges at work every day.

Our Panelists:

Ashton Spann (moderator), UI and Digital Designer, PatientPoint
Megan Richter, Product Design Lead, Kroger
Nikki Volpenhein, UX Interaction Designer, GE Aviation
Mic Riley, Product Designer II, Paycor
Joe Young, Interactive Designer, TEKsystems at Quest Diagnostics

Workshop: Owning Your Personal Branding Game

How’s your resume? How’s your digital footprint? How’re your interview chops? Are you confident? Kinda confident? Lost? So much of what we believe about finding jobs and getting jobs and keeping jobs was decided in 1973. It isn’t 1973 and emerging designers weren’t born to play by those rules.

This fast fun hour is about who you are…really. We’ll share lots of stories about how you can stand out by being truly you and living in integrity. Bring your resume. Come with questions. Hopefully, you will leave with answers, ideas and inspiration.

Our Presenter:

Dr. Jim Friedman, White Family Associate Clinical Professor of Creativity, Miami University Farmer School of Business

Keynote: “Thank U, Next”

We’re so freakin’ grateful for our past experiences, but at some point in your professional career you’ll probably ask yourself, “is it time to look for another job?” Sometimes our passions and goals change over the course of our professional career, but deciding whether or not to leave a job for a new opportunity can still be a tough decision. During this keynote presentation, we’ll hear two designers speak honestly about when they knew it was time to move on and what it’s like to tell an employer goodbye. Whether you’re actively looking for new opportunities, or just wondering if maybe you should take that phone call with a recruiter—this talk will give you the inside scoop to know when it’s time to say thank you, next.

Our Keynote Speakers:

Troy Woolery, Competency Manager of User Experience and Senior UX Consultant, Fusion Alliance
Mandy Lehman, Designer/Photographer, MANMAN
